Unbridled: A story of Kentucky’s forgotten recreational horses

The drive into Breathitt County can take a while from the western side of Kentucky, or at least the scenery makes it feel that way. Driving on the Hal Rogers Parkway for 59 miles at an incline with wooded hills on either side has a way of distorting time. The same smattering of oaks, elms, and the occasional pine welcome drivers at a slight angle as they climb the hills into coal country.

Legalizing alcohol sales divides Russell County residents

Every September, Lake Cumberland Poker Run brings a surge of boaters to the docks and marinas of Russell County, Kentucky. Spectators and competitors alike crowd the concrete boat ramp with trucks and bright-colored power boats to load supplies and cases of beer aboard to take across the lake.

Deep Cuts

It was an average looking CD case, like any other my dad left behind. I had pulled it from the shelf by chance as I was searching for something to listen to. I never expected to be holding a portrait of an anthropomorphic hairless cat chained to a dartboard outlined with throwing knives, surrounded by chimera with Satan heads. My 8-year-old mind couldn’t comprehend what I was looking at. This wasn’t like the stoic morbidity of the cow skull on the front of the Eagles Album. This was more unsettling than the crooked old man on Led Zeppelin IV.
